DAMP IN BUILDINGS

Damp can be distressing in terms of human health & maintaining
the value and condition of the property. There are three main categories
of damp in buildings.
PENETRATING
DAMP
Caused by rain entering part
of the structure of the house through damaged tiles, gutters, bricks
or other features of the building. This will unsurprisingly appear
after periods of wet weather & may dry out after a few weeks.
Specialist building expertise should be sought to identify the source
of the problem & rectify.
RISING
DAMP
This form of damp is caused by moisture spreading
from the ground up through the walls & floors of a building.
This is normally prevented from happening in buildings by having
a damp proof layer in walls & floors.
In older houses this takes the form of a layer of special moisture
proof bricks, normally deep blue in colour. In more modern buildings
a waterproof membrane is inserted between two layers of brick during
construction.
If a house has been built without a damp proof
course, chemicals can be injected into the wall. Evidence of this
can be seen by plugged holes about 200mm above the ground, on the
outside face of exterior walls.
Damp proof courses can become damaged over time & again specialist
building expertise should be sought.
